Santa Rosa Press Democrat purchases Publicus Online Publishing System
SAXoTECH, a leading supplier of content management and online production systems for media companies, announced today that The Press Democrat (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and the Petaluma Argus-Courier (Petaluma, Calif.), have purchased the Publicus Online Publishing System to produce their Web sites. SAXoTECH made the announcement at the Newspaper Association of America's Connections 2003 conference and tradeshow in Orlando, Fla.
Both papers are owned by The New York Times Company and are part of The New York Times Regional Newspaper Group (NYTRNG). The other 13 newspapers in the group purchased Publicus in early 2002, and all are now live with SAXoTECH's Web content management system.
The Press Democrat, a daily paper with a Sunday circulation of 97,400, and the Petaluma Argus-Courier, a weekly paper with a circulation of 8,000, join a growing list of North American newspapers that have chosen Publicus to help them improve their online user experience, sell content online and improve content flow from their editorial systems to the Web. The Press Democrat will use Publicus to publish PressDemocrat.com (http://www.pressdemocrat.com). The Petaluma Argus-Courier can be found online at: http://www.arguscourier.com.
"We are very happy with our relationship with The New York Times Company," said Mark Prokosch, president of SAXoTECH, Inc. "From the first site that launched last spring, the NYTRNG newspapers have been great customers for us. We are sure that Santa Rosa and Petaluma will be pleased with the system as well."
The Press Democrat contract includes the Publicus Base System, as well as the following Add-on Modules:
- Agenda Module: For creating a searchable online community calendar
- Multi-Channel Module: For delivering content via e-mail newsletters and to handheld computers
- Guides Module: For developing online travel and business directories
- E-Commerce Module: For selling online subscriptions and access to the paper's archives
- Taxonomy Module:For organizing the site's content according to a hierarchical set of keywords
The Press Democrat will organize and tag all of its content according to a keyword taxonomy. This will enable the newspaper to easily give contextual meaning to all its content and publish that information in a more flexible manner. The Press Democrat will use a third-party auto-categorizer application to automatically add taxonomy data to all online content in real-time.
Publicus will be integrated with the Press Democrat's Unisys editorial front-end system.
The contract also includes training, consulting services, support and software maintenance.
The implementation process for the Web sites of both newspapers will begin later this year.
