Worcester Telegram & Gazette purchases Publicus Online Publishing System Print E-mail
SAXoTECH, a leading supplier of content management and online production systems for media companies, announced today that the Telegram & Gazette (Worcester, Mass.), has purchased the Publicus Online Publishing System to produce its Web site. SAXoTECH made the announcement at the Newspaper Association of America's Connections 2003 conference and tradeshow in Orlando, Fla.

The Telegram & Gazette, with Sunday circulation of 124,000, joins a growing list of newspapers that have chosen the Publicus Web content management system to help it improve its online user experience, sell content online and improve content flow from their editorial systems to the Web. The Telegram & Gazette will use Publicus to publish Telegram.com (http://www.telegram.com).

"The Telegram & Gazette joins 13 other papers owned by The New York Times Company that are already using Publicus to power their Web sites," said Mark Prokosch, President of SAXoTECH, Inc. "The Publicus implementation project in Worcester has already begun and is expected to go live in February."

The Telegram & Gazette contract includes the Publicus Base System, as well as the following Add-on Modules:

  • Agenda Module: For creating a searchable online community calendar
  • Multi-Channel Module: For delivering content via e-mail newsletters and to handheld computers
  • Guides Module: For developing online travel and business directories
  • E-Commerce Module: For selling online subscriptions and access to the paper's archives
  • Taxonomy Module:For organizing the site's content according to a hierarchical set of keywords

The Telegram & Gazette will organize and tag all of its content according to a keyword taxonomy. This will enable the newspaper to easily give contextual meaning to all its content and publish that information in a more flexible manner. The Telegram & Gazette will use a third-party auto-categorizer application to automatically add taxonomy data to all online content in real-time.

Publicus will be integrated with The Telegram & Gazette's legacy editorial front-end system, as well as the Clickshare financial transaction processing system from Clickshare Corporation. The Telegram & Gazette will be the first Publicus site to integrate the Clickshare system.

"The built-in registration system of Publicus will integrate seamlessly with their Clickshare transaction system to service the Telegram & Gazette's substantial paid online-only subscription base as well as provide free access to the site for their print subscribers," said Prokosch.

The contract also includes training, consulting services, support and software maintenance. SAXoTECH will host and manage The Telegram & Gazette's Publicus Web site at the company's datacenter in northern Virginia.
