Think Digital First: The Sun’s 24/7 Continuous News Operation Print E-mail

Marcelo Duran reports in this month’s Newspapers & Technology on the recent newsroom shift to web-first publishing at The Gainesville Sun . The Sun (part of the New York Times Regional Media Group) has been ahead of the curve with their online presence for quite a few years by adding new channels and products. But this recent development represents fundamental change in their business model.

Among the technology changes they had was a need for a particular workflow that went beyond the standard functionality of our online presentation system. (The entire NYTRMG runs its web presentation framework from a centralized deployment of the SAXOTECH Online publishing platform.) Very quickly, through use of the SAXOTECH Online Scripting Engine, they were able to deploy very powerful tools to control web presentation in a way that is truly outside the box.

I’m reminded of a conversation I had with Jeff Moriarty from the NYTRMG’s corporate office recently. Jeff summed it up like this (paraphrased): Before we had any kind CMS for online, we had a guy in the corner who constantly worked to keep up a website. Then, we gave that guy the Saxotech Online system, and he suddenly had the capacity to do ten times the work. But now, we need to empower every person in the newsroom to contribute to digital publishing, everyday.

That’s the single biggest driver in our business today, and The Sun is helping lead the way.
