E.W. Scripps’ Treasure Coast Selects SAXOTECH Mediaware Center™ To Streamline Content Production for Print and Web Publishing Print E-mail

TAMPA, Fla. – Sept. 23, 2008 – In a move to increase newsroom efficiency and present higher quality print and digital products, E.W. Scripps’ Treasure Coast newsrooms will move onto the SAXOTECH Mediaware Center platform, the enterprise content management and production workflow system for media companies.

The selection of SAXOTECH’s platform will streamline centralized production of four daily newspapers on Florida’s southeast coast from a single system implementation, complete with disaster recovery at a secondary site. The Stuart News, The Press Journal (Vero Beach), Port St. Lucie News, and The Tribune (Fort Pierce) will gain workflow efficiencies using a common system to plan, make assignments, and track creation of stories and supporting assets. The Mediaware Center will provide a single point of content creation and editing for all print and digital products, using forward-thinking workflow and advanced zoning features.

To better serve its communities, the Treasure Coast news department created a “Yes Desk” staff to receive and process reader-provided content. Today, the Yes Desk handles reader-contributed items ranging from event listings to reader videos, from press releases to reader-written stories. Managing and organizing that content, and then preparing it to publish both online and in print, can be challenging.

“The SAXOTECH Mediaware Center will give a new level of efficiency and content tracking to the Yes Desk and our entire staff,” said Dennis Durkee, managing editor. “That will enable us to be more responsive to our communities. We will get local content faster to our online users, and we will edit and package local content better for our print readers.”

Dr. Ed Lindoo, director of information and technology (I.T.) for Treasure Coast, stated SAXOTECH was their choice based on three factors.  “First, with a declining workforce we needed a system that would enable the news department to be more efficient.  Second, from an I.T. point of view, we need to reduce the amount of desktop support and SAXOTECH’s integration with Citrix Thin-Client farms running in a VM environment lets us do that.  Finally, through the years we have seen our news department begin handling a variety of content from numerous channels and market segments.  The Mediaware Center will greatly assist in streamlining communication and collaboration.”

In addition to enhancing the content creation process, the Treasure Coast Mediaware Center deployment will provide designers with new tools based on SAXOTECH’s deep integration with Adobe InDesign. The system will also feature automatic image processing to ensure consistent quality photos in a rapid production environment, alleviating time-consuming manual processes.

Implementation of the SAXOTECH Mediaware Center will begin this fall and is expected to go live in the spring 2009.
