AXoTECH, Inc. News Release
For Release 9 a.m. EDT March 31, 2000

SAXoTECH, Inc., announced the sale of the 300-seat system,
which will include:

  • The Basic SAXoPRESS Editorial System, including the Articles Module, SAXoTEXT text editor, Photos Module, Layout Module and QuarkXPress Xtensions

  • SAXoTECH's Automatic Image Processor software will automate the process of preparing images for Web and print output

  • The NetNews Web Publishing Xtra will integrate the newsroom into the process of building Web pages and help improve the Times' Web workflow

  • The SAXoBRS Archiving System will allow the Times to archive all of their published text, images and pages in one central, indexed repository

  • The company will also deploy the SAXoAnyWare(tm) system (which allows users to perform basic editorial functions through a Web browser) as a remote access solution

The Washington Times, published in our nation's capital and one of the most often quoted newspapers in the country, has a daily circulation of over 100,000. The Times will also use the SAXoPRESS system to publish the National Weekly Edition of the paper and Insight On the News, a weekly newsmagazine.

SAXoPRESS will be integrated with the AdForce(tm) Ad Layout System and the Roundhouse(tm) Ad Tracking System from Managing Editor, Inc.

"Of all the demonstrations we had of various publishing software, SAXoTECH clearly stood out," said Gil Roschuni, R&D Manager for The Times. "We are especially pleased with the ease by which we can log onto the system from anywhere in the world with just a Web browser, and how well it integrated with the myriad of other software needed to put out a newspaper and publish on the Web. It will dramatically streamline the process."

To complement the new editorial system, the Times is purchasing copy-dot scanners, digital color proofers and double-truck imagesetters which will be located in their printing facility, approximately a kilometer from the newsroom. This will enable the Times to output imposed broadsheet pages to film, punched to match the plate configuration, eliminating the shuttling of negatives from the newsroom to the press facility and shortening the time to press.

All of the editorial departments in the Times' Washington, D.C., office will be converted to SAXoPRESS before the end of the year. The installation project will begin in April. The Times' SAXoPRESS system will be staged on Sun Solaris(tm) servers running an Oracle8i(tm) database, with Extreme Networks Gigabit(tm) backbone switches and Apple MacOS(tm) pagination, editing and reporting workstations. Over 200 new iMacs and 50 new Power Macintosh G4s will be deployed in the Times' newsroom.

"We are very excited by the fact that the Washington Times will be the largest SAXoPRESS installation to date," said Frank Loversky, President of SAXoTECH, Inc. "I think this contract clearly shows that SAXoTECH will be a major systems vendor in the U.S."
