System Requirements
HARDWARE & THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE:

The following is a generic description of SAXoTECH’s recommended hardware setup and standard software setup, used in connection with our software.

SAXoPRESS Editorial Workstation
It does not matter whether the editorial workstations are PC or Mac. You can actually mix them as you wish.

PC MAC
  • PC Intel Pentium
  • 166 MHz MMX processor
  • 64MB SDRAM
  • 2,1GB hard disk
  • keyboard & mouse
  • 17" color monitor
  • 10/100MBps fast Ethernet
  • Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
  • Adobe Type Manager 4.0
  • Relevant fonts
  • Power Mac min. 100 MHz
  • MacOS version 7.5.x or newer
  • min. 64 MB RAM
  • 160 MB free space on HD
  • 17” color monitor
  • keyboard & mouse
  • 10/100MBps fast Ethernet

In case you choose to utilize the SAXoTEXT editor with MS Word 97, each editorial workstation will also need this standard software. However, at the present time this option only exists on a PC platform, as we are waiting for MS Word 98 for Mac to provide the same solution on a Mac platform.

SAXoPRESS Pagination Workstation
Pagination has to be on the same hardware platform, as problems may occur with fonts in QuarkXPress if you mix hardware platforms due to font differences between PC and Mac.

  • 200MHz MMX processor
  • 96 or 128 MB SDRAM
  • 2,1GB hard disk
  • keyboard & mouse
  • 21" color monitor
  • 10/100MB fast Ethernet
  • Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
  • Adobe Type Manager 4.0
  • Relevant fonts
  • QuarkXPress 4.0.2
  • Timbuktu 4.0

  • 250 Mb free space on HD
  • 20” color monitor
  • Extended Keyboard (102 key)
  • keyboard & mouse
  • 10/100MBps fast Ethernet
  • QuarkXPress 4.0.2
  • QuicKeys 3.5x or newer
  • Adobe Type Manager
  • Relevant fonts
  • Timbuktu 4.0

SAXoManager
Min. Same as editorial workstations.

SAXoAdmin
Min. Same as editorial workstations.

SAXoPRESS PerfectMatch H&J Server (PC/Mac)
There is a direct relation between the choice of platform for Pagination stations and platform for the PerfectMatch Server. QuarkXPress has to operate on the same platform in both places to get the exact H&J as some fonts are not exactly the same on PC and Mac. I.e. Mac Pagination means Mac PerfectMatch Server, and PC Pagination means PC PerfectMatch Server.

PC MAC
  • PC Intel Pentium
  • 200MHz MMX processor
  • 64MB SDRAM
  • 2,1GB hard disk
  • keyboard & mouse
  • 17" color monitor
  • 100MBps fast Ethernet
  • Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
  • Adobe Type Manager 4.0
  • Relevant fonts
  • QuarkXPress 4.0
  • Timbuktu 4.0
  • Power Macintosh min. 200 Mhz
  • MacOS version 7.5.x or newer
  • min. 96 Mb RAM
  • 250 Mb free storage space on HD
  • 17” color monitor
  • keyboard & mouse
  • 100MBps fast Ethernet
  • QuarkXPress 4.0.2

SAXoPRESS Database Server
Operating Systems

The SAXoPRESS Database Server runs on either:

  • Windows NT 4.0 (or newer), or
  • UNIX Sun Solaris 2.6 operating system, plus.
    • for MacOS-UNIX networks - Helios Ethershare 2.5 per user (a remote robot is a user).
    • for NT-UNIX networks - SAMBA 1.9.18p8 per user (a remote robot is a user).

Database Software

  • Oracle Workgroup Server 8.0.5 or newer,

Hardware:

As Server configurations will vary a lot based on site size, type of operation, etc. we have decided to only provide you with a generic hardware configuration here. However, if you wish to get a quote on a Server for a given size operation, click here.

Generic Hardware Description:

  • A Y2K compliant up-to-date PC or SUN/UNIX - fitting your size of operation.
  • 2-3 MB RAM per concurrent database user (a remote robot is a user)
  • Hard drive space minimum: enough space to hold 14 days of production data + the space necessary for your archive.
  • 10/100MB Fast Ethernet

Metaframe
Many of our clients have small remote offices with reporters and editors. At times it is too expensive to have these offices run online to the newspaperís central database all the time. In these instances we utilize Metaframe.

The Citrix MetaFrame/Enterprise concept is built on a server based run of all Windows applications from a Multi-user Citrix MetaFrame Server. The advantage is obvious: You can run a number of applications as a server for a number of workstations so that each client functions as an "terminal" related to the MetaFrame Server.  Read more about MetaFrame

The most obvious advantages are
- High speed run of Windows applications without demanding client hardware and a minimum bandwidth if the client is placed remote. In some cases a 386-based PC with 2 MB RAM and DOS can run Office/97 through a 28.8 modem with a speed similar to a Pentium PC localized at the LAN network. For running SAXoPRESS we do recommend at least 486-based PC and 64/128 kbps ISDN lines.

- WinFrame gives you a minimum of system administration because you are only running a Citrix WinFrame client from your workstation.

- WinFrame can be used through a standard WEB-browser.

- WinFrame Access is built on a Windows NT platform. Communications recommend the WinFrame Server and the clients are handled with IPX/SPX, TCP/IP, Netbios or Netbeui. The clients can be running the following type of OS: DOS, Windows 3.x, Windows 95/NT, MacOS.

When we are installing a SAXoPRESS system at a newspaper many things have to be in order, including the infrastructure. In general, it is a precondition:

- that the network backbone is 100 MB, and that the server and the robots all run in this 100 MB section. Network access to workstations has to be 10 MB.

- that there is already access to 110V/230V grounded, twisted pair ethernet, ISDN and public lines with the necessary number of sockets in the immediate vicinity of where the equipment is to be set up.

- that there is already twisted pair patch cables for the connection between wall socket and computer.

- that all computers and servers have already been configured and set up in the appropriate place, and plugged into the network, so that it is ready for the installation of SAXoPRESS.

- that upgraded and well functioning system software has been installed on possible existing workstations, on which SAXoPRESS is to be installed. Furthermore, there has to be sufficient free RAM and hard drive capacity, following the instructions given above.

- that the we can get access to the network, either through the Internet or through modem/ISDN uplink with dial back, via Remote Access Services/Apple Remote Access and get access to the relevant computers via Timbuktu - so we can service the system. The modem used is to be able to handle at least 28.800 bps.
